Metrosexual Mania: Who Knew?
By: Tamara Guillory
A new breed of man shows his soft, sensitive, feminine side. There, standing next to you in the hair care aisle, or in the
salon having his nails perfectly manicured, while checking out the latest fashion magazines- no, he's not a gay man, he's a metrosexual.
Many people confuse Metrosexuality with Homosexuality; this is a common misconception. A Metrosexual man is a straight man
with feminine or homosexual characteristics. Judging by the popularity of the TV program, "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", many more men want to join the Metrosexual
craze.
American males are increasingly interested in fashion, fragrances and facial/skin care products, things that some years ago would
have marked them as "gay men". If you ask older generations, often they cannot tell you what a Metrosexual is, but the truth is, the term Metrosexual has been around since the 80's.
Some product manufacturers and advertisers, as well as social observers believe that it is just a matter of time before the word, 'Metrosexual', becomes a part of everyday
vocabulary.
In a survey of 510 males by Euro RSCG, 49% said there is nothing wrong with facials and manicures. In a recent poll in the United States, more than a thousand men between the
ages of 21 and 48 were asked, "What desires do you have for the future?" An overwhelming 89% of the men said they wanted to look good and stylish.
It is becoming more and more common for men to look and smell as good as women. So, what's influencing men to think outside the box of male stereotypes? They might be influenced by
magazines such as FHM and GQ, which are devoting a lot of their pages to fashion. These magazines are encouraging men to dress to perfection and fall for the media's
image of the "perfect" man; washboard abs, flawless skin, coiffed hair, etc. But, can a Metrosexuals' preoccupation with his physical apperance become too extreme? If you are so
preoccupied with your 'look' that it interferes with your relationships, school, work or everyday life, you are probably taking Metrosexuality to the extreme.
Metrosexuality is so normal, popular and socially accepted throughout America, that you should become more familiar with the term.
